A Connecticut Radiology Leader With Deep Colorado Roots: Dr. Gail Weingast

Connecticut’s healthcare landscape is home to many accomplished physicians, but few carry with them the kind of layered, multi-decade training history that defines Dr. Gail Weingast. A native of the Northeast by professional home, she was shaped in many ways by her years of training and early practice in Colorado — a period that gave her a foundation as solid as any in her field.

The story begins, as it often does for remarkable physicians, with an education that didn’t initially point toward medicine. In 1969, Gail Weingast enrolled at Jackson College, Tufts University, in Medford, Massachusetts, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. That early chapter reveals a curiosity and versatility that has characterized her approach to everything since. The pivot to medicine arrived shortly after, leading her to the Boston University School of Medicine, where she earned her medical degree and became Dr. Gail Weingast in 1976.

Colorado then became the training ground where she would build the specialized expertise her career required. At Colorado General Hospital in Denver, she methodically completed a pediatrics internship, a two-year pediatrics residency, a three-year radiology residency, and an ultrasound fellowship — a comprehensive, seven-year journey through some of medicine’s most demanding training programs. St. Anthony’s Hospital, also in Denver, hosted her final post-graduate radiology studies, which she completed in 1984.

The years that followed took her through hospitals in Colorado and New York, where she applied her training in real-world clinical environments and continued to build the diagnostic instincts that distinguish excellent radiologists from merely competent ones.

Today, Gail Weingast MD leads the ultrasound and breast imaging department at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut — a position she has held for more than 20 years. Under her direction, the department has achieved a standing as one of New England’s premier imaging centers, a legacy built on her Colorado-forged expertise and the professional dedication she has brought to every chapter of her career.
